Mr. van der Meulen was born in the west part of the Netherlands as the youngest son of five children. For most of his childhood, he grew up in the Eastern part of the country. After his formal education, he moved to Great Britain to attend an 18-month course at The London School of foreign trade. Mr. van der Meulen's father was a successful entrepreneur. His mother ran the household and was able to create a harmonic country-lifestyle situation for her family. The family was fond of sports, particularly horseback riding. Together with his parents, Mr. van der Meulen moved to Great Britain to build themselves a new home. Later they moved back again to The Netherlands.
Mr. van der Meulen grew up in a traditional classic way and understood at a young age that tradition, respect, and integrity were important to him, not knowing then that this would be such an important part of his life later on as a butler. He lived in several countries around Europe. Mr. van der Meulen has a long history of coaching and training in Hotel Management but also at some of the finest international corporate businesses. Motivation, cooperation, and setting goals have always been an important part of his schedules. Mr. van der Meulen is truly a superb butler. He started his professional career at one of the largest banks in the Netherlands, with worldwide affiliations, extending foreign loans to banks abroad. At this same bank, he was also their Guest Relations Officer, where he assisted The Board of Directors and General Management of his department as such. Although Mr. van der Meulen enjoyed the position for more than 6 years, he moved on to Hotel–Management.
Traditionally people make a start at the reception desk in order to understand the policies of the Swiss Hotel group, and this is what Mr. van der Meulen did also. Shortly after that, he became their Sales manager, also attending all national and international Fairs. He then started a staff training program for service, attitude, telephone and desk training. After some years the Hotel was taken over by a different Hotel group. The new owners foresaw a totally different approach to service and for Mr. van der Meulen that was the reason to move on.
For several years, Mr. van der Meulen was Sales manager for two major German companies for the Benelux Countries. He created various training programs for the salespeople in the different shops around Germany and the Benelux for them to focus on service, attitude and commercial success. Out of passion, it was during this time that he started working part time as a butler for several leading families in The Netherlands. This actually was the beginning of his new butling career. After working as a butler part/time, it was at the end of 2006 that Mr. van der Meulen decided to become a professional butler. He did so by attending the training program of The International Butler Academy. Right afterward he started working as a butler for a prominent family.
Because of his vast experience in service, combined with his training, but mostly because of his passion, Mr. van der Meulen later became the senior butling instructor at The International Butler Academy. Mr. van der Meulen is also trainer and consultant for some of the international clients of The International Butler Academy. He enjoys traveling to different part of the world, not only to teach staff what service is and what service means, but also to assist management with the setup and implementation of butler service departments.
